The Association of Master Upholsterers
The Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers was founded in 1947, making it one of the oldest associations in the furniture industry.
To be admitted as a member, a business has to be vetted to ensure they meet the high standards of the association. To ensure these standards are maintained, each business is re-vetted every five years.
Its membership comprises craft upholsterers, upholstered furniture manufacturers, chair frame manufacturers, and others associated with the craft of upholstery.
Membership totals in excess of 600 member companies located throughout the UK.
The association is actively involved with training and setting standards, being one of the driving forces behind the Furniture and Furnishings Industry National Training Organization (FFINTO). AMU&SF members were responsible for writing the standards for the national NVQ’s for Upholstery and for Soft Furnishings.
The AMU&SF also sets its own standards where national standards are not appropriate or available, and runs a number of award schemes for students.
The association also publishes a trade magazine ‘Upholsterer & Soft Furnisher’ as well as a consumer information magazine ‘Décor Today’.
