There can be little doubt that it is preferable to Cover or Re-Upholster a good piece of furniture than to send it to land-fill.
Good furniture will almost inevitably be made from hard wood which is increasingly in short supply in the world. (unfortunately there have been a number of cases recently where it is suspected illegally logged hardwood has found its way to the UK).
Show-wood furniture with polished hard wood is a delight to see and to sit in. With a strong movement nowadays to retro style furniture, refurbishment of 50’s and 60’s chairs is an ethically and stylish way to bring individuality to your home.
And with all other styles of furniture, your room can be brought right up to date with modern fabrics and designs without shipping a suite half way across the world.
However the method of refurbishment will also have an impact on the environment as re-upholstery will inevitably require the removal of bulky fillings and foam.
At Lynplan we believe we are unique in re-cycling this old foam removed from furniture which eventually finds its way into carpet underlay, so even this doesn’t go to land fill.
All other offcuts of new foam are also re-cycled as high density recon foam.
In addition efficient computer cutting of fabric reduces waste to a minimum.
And as a last thought – as well as the environment, lets preserve the humans too: I count myself very lucky to work in an environment where people actually make something, and where each of us has pride in his or her finished work. I would like to think that the future includes a good measure of such worthwhile activity. Through our training and development programmes and your support it is good to contemplate a future where we can keep these valuable skills thriving in this country.
